When 140 characters are not enough, you can use Twitlonger. This online service allows you to post twitter messages longer that the 140 characters allowed by Twitter. All you have to do is request acces to beta at hello@twitlonger.com. Then you’ll receive a code that allows you to use Twitlonger.
