Being someone that has his hands in multiple projects, I’ve found myself using multiple Twitter accounts for various reasons. While desktop solutions to this problem are okay, I often want a web-based solution that I can pull up anywhere. Splitweet provides such an interface and has managed to make the whole ordeal fairly painless.

Adding Accounts
Once you’ve setup and confirmed your account, your off to adding your Twitter credentials. Adding accounts is somewhat fast. However, given their audience is users with multiple Twitter accounts, it would make more sense to provide a page that allows me to add several accounts at once (perhaps with some ajax magic adding and verifying each one as I type the next one). Something like that would not only make the process smoother, but would add an extra ‘zip’ to the setup process that makes you feel like you’ve found an app that means business.

Dashboard
After setting up your accounts you land back on the main page with a nice looking dashboard of activity. Everything seems pretty obvious–your tweet area up top, your recent timeline at the bottom, and replies on the right.

But wait! Each account has a color square to represent it. These squares show up in your timeline below and stylishly let you know which tweet is coming from which account. Even better, if you follow someone on multiple accounts, Splitweet knows that and just shows all relevant color squares next to that person’s tweet. Nice.

Tweeting
Tweeting allows you to select which accounts to tweet out on. Since most of the time I don’t tweet the same thing across multiple accounts, it would be nice to have a default account that always stays checked. I suppose if you had dozens of accounts (God help us), an account grouping feature would come in handy.

Brands (keywords)
Another nice touch to the service is the ability to track your brand. Brand tracking is basically saved keyword searches against the public twitter stream. The ability to track these and have them appear in your dashboard is great. I’d like to see some more ability to customize the search. Some keywords or brands are not always unique enough to produce 100% relevant results (i.e. if your brand has the word “blog” in it, good luck).

Summary
All in all, I am very impressed with Splitweet. It was a pleasant surprise find and I’ll likely continue using it to manage my multiple Twitter accounts. Gearing this towards corporate users is a smart idea. I’d expect to see them add more advanced features and charge for a premium version.
